we made the trip back to gilda’s club since shortly after the diagnosis when we both became official members (we even have laminated cards to prove it). it feels like a lifetime ago that we stepped foot here and so much happened in between. angel has been feeling antsy since her last treatment, and with some gentle encouragement we got her on her way. for those of who don’t know, gilda’s club is named after gilda radner, who was diagnosed with ovarian cancer in the 80’s. her dying wish to her husband gene wilder, and her therapist, was to set up a support system for cancer survivors, and a place where they could receive as much support as gilda experienced during her own fight with cancer. gilda’s club is a very warm and sincere place. everyone we’ve met so far has been really genuine and into the cause of supporting their members.
angel plans to go to six of the eight yoga classes per month, and also the wellness groups. there is a class that is for young cancer survivors which looks great on paper, but is only for young woman who are surviving breast cancer, and have no plans of opening to any other types of cancer. this makes angel feel left out. she fits the young and female portion. the treatments and side effects are different, but coping with cancer, the feelings of loss, and pain cancer brings on seems the same across the board. actually angel just told me that there is a young man who is trying to start up a universal young cancer survivors group at gilda’s. maybe she can help advocate for this group to start up too.
march is national colorectal cancer awareness month! so go eat some extra greens & fiber and broom yourself clean ;)
